States of Grace was a project started during the 2008 election cycle. It was a response to the negativity and cynicism that has become so prevalent in the cable news age.

Grace has many meanings, but for most it is an unexpected gift in our lives. With the New Year and the new government in Washington, I saw an opportunity to rise above our past mistakes and start anew.

With this thought in mind, I set up a series of workshops from August through December, 2008. I provided the materials and asked the participants to create a flag with their best intentions. The flags were based on Tibetan prayer flags which are hung for auspicious occasions.

Over one thousand flags were created during the workshop phase. They were hung in January and February of 2009 at ten different locations. They were burned according to tradition in March, 2009.
